Void Deck Railings (SIM)
Comic Strip by Sean Chong

THREE railings have been put up in the void deck at Block 143 Mei Ling Street, each measuring 3.5m long. Apparently, they were put up because residents had complained about soccer games being played there – which were not only noisy, but led to “dirty walls and damaged light fittings”. Similar barricades can also be found at a handful of other void decks in Singapore, but it made us wonder: Sure, it might stop people from playing football – but what about other sports?

Cross Island Line (SIM)
by Sean Chong
THE plan to construct the eighth Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore stretching 50km long, the Cross Island Line (CRL), was announced in early 2013. Nature groups have raised concerns because the proposed alignment of the CRL entails 2km of the entire route cutting directly through the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (CCNR). The depth below ground is approximately 40m deep.
The alternative route, according to Land Transport Authority (LTA), would involve the CRL skirting around the nature reserve with an additional alignment of 9km. This would incur an extra cost of $2 billion. However, according to industry experts, this $2 billion is possibly only a fraction of the total cost.
Should we pursue development at the expense of environmental conservation? Do the benefits really outweigh the cost?
